TRANSILLUMINATION - innovative tools

X-ray free near-infrared transillumination.

Offering a wide range of clinical applications.

Well-accepted and valuable adjunctive diagnostic tool.

TRANSILLUMINATION

"A bright light can illuminate the translucent tooth structure to reveal changes in tooth color, the presence of cracks and fractures, as well as other defects.  Typically, the majority of caries lesions are visually accessible.  Caries on occlusal and buccal/lingual surfaces account for almost 90% of caries in children and adolescents.  Approximately 60% of caries occur in 20% of the population, and fewer of 5% of adults are caries-free.  Caries has been identified as the single most common chronic disease of childhood. While caries is decreasing on interproximal surfaces, occlusal pit and fissure caries has shown a continued increase, yet the interproximal surfaces of the tooth are the least accessible to diagnose."

"To address the need to decrease patients' exposure to ionizing radiation, clinicians can safely evaluate difficult-to-access proximal surfaces using ... (transillumination)."Howard E. Strassler, DMD; and Mark L. Pitel, DMD (Compendium of Continuing Education in Dentistry magazine)

In vitro near-infrared imaging of natural secondary caries

Secondary caries stands as the leading reason for the failure of composite restorations and
dentists spend more time replacing existing restorations than placing new ones. Current clinical strategies, and even modern visible light methods designed to detect decay, lack the sensitivity to distinguish incipient lesions, are confounded by staining on the surface and within the tooth, or are limited to detecting decay on the tooth surface. Near-IR (NIR) imaging methods, such as NIR … transillumination imaging...are promising strategies for imaging secondary caries...
